Welcome to our first ever pick of what’s on this weekend in Ipswich. The aim of which is to pick out a small selection of events that are happening in the town, publishing the article every single Friday — we’ll also try to think outside the box, not just choosing the stuff that everybody already knows about when we can.
Here’s what we’ve chosen for the weekend of April 27-28:
Holi celebration at Holywells Park:
The Hindu ‘Festival of Colour’ comes to Ipswich this Sunday. People celebrate the oncoming of the new season by throwing coloured paints and powders over one another. Sounds unusual if you’ve not seen it before, but I’m sure it will be a lot of fun. All are welcome, and there’ll also be a bonfire, indian snacks, music, face-painting and henna hand-painting.
Thumbs up to the organisers, and the local council, for continuing to bring new and diverse cultural events to the town
Location: Holywells Park, Myrtle Road Entrance. │ Admission: Free │ Time/Date: April 28th, 2013 at 14:30-17:30pm
Kids go for a quid at last Portman Road game of the season:
Ipswich Town Football Club want everyone to come along to the last home game of the season against Birmingham City. They’re offering free entry to Junior Blues members, with all other children getting through the turnstiles for just £1.
There’s also going to be a bunch of stuff going on around the stadium, including bouncy castles, a human football table and the Ipswich Town mascot race, among others.
Location: Portman Road Football Stadium │ Admission: Adults £20 (full pricing here) │ Time/Date: April 27th, kick-off at 3pm
New Wolsey Theatre Tours:
Now registered as charity, the New Wolsey Theatre is opening up its doors this Saturday and offering visitors the chance to see what happens behind the scenes.
Tour guides will take you around and show you everything from the dressing rooms, to the on-stage trap doors. More details can be found on the New Wolsey Theatre website.
Location: New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive │ Admission: A suggested donation between £1-5 │ Time/Date: April 27th at 1pm
Iron Man 3 at Cineworld in Ipswich
I’m putting this one in here for self-satisfaction really. However, I’ve no doubt there’s many of you in the town who have been eagerly awaiting the release of the new Iron Man 3 movie — and it’s out this week.
You can catch it at Cineworld at a shed-load of different starting times, in 2D, 3D IMAX, and an audio descriptive version. The full timetable can be seen here.
Location: Cineworld Ipswich │ Price: Up to £13.70 adult │ Date: Various showings all weekend

So, I'm the guy behind this It's Ipswich thing. I've lived in the town my whole life, and finally decided that Ipswich needed somewhere a little different to find out and witness what's going on in the town.
